5 Mistakes to Avoid Before Your Laser
Hair Removal Session
The Secret to Smooth, Hair-Free Skin
Laser hair removal has become the ultimate confidence booster—no more razors, waxing appointments, or ingrown hairs. Yet many clients unknowingly sabotage their results by skipping proper pre-care.
Dr Lubna, aesthetic specialist at Nyle Skin Medical Center (Mirdif, Dubai), explains the five critical mistakes to avoid before your laser session.
1. Skipping the Razor the Day Before
The laser targets pigment inside the hair root—not the strand above the skin.
If you arrive unshaved, surface hair absorbs the laser heat and may cause irritation or minor burns.
✅ Pro tip: Shave 12–24 hours before treatment. Use a clean razor and mild, fragrance-free shaving cream.
2. Waxing, Threading, or Tweezing Beforehand
Removing hair from the root leaves nothing for the laser to detect.
Many first-timers wax just before their appointment, thinking it helps. Instead, it delays effective results.
✅ Stick to shaving only for 3 weeks before your session.
3. Tanning or Skipping Sunscreen
Dubai’s sun is intense. Tanned skin confuses the laser’s pigment sensors and increases risk of hyper-pigmentation.
✅ Avoid direct sunlight or tanning beds 10 days prior. Always apply SPF 50+ to treated areas.
4. Using Active Skincare Too Close to Treatment
Ingredients like retinol, glycolic acid, and vitamin C make your skin photosensitive.
✅ Stop actives 3–5 days before your laser and resume 48 hours after.
5. Forgetting to Share Your Medical History
Some medications—antibiotics, isotretinoin, hormonal pills—affect laser response.
✅ Always disclose medication use or previous laser experiences to your dermatologist so energy levels can be customized.
Bonus: Hydrate & Moisturize
Hydrated skin conducts laser energy evenly. Drink water, skip alcohol, and moisturize nightly before your appointment.
